Dalmatians are medium-sized, well-balanced dogs serving mainly as a watchdog, companion, therapy dog and performing in agility, flyball and some other canine sports. They are active and intelligent, and need training from an early age.

Dalmatians are rather easy to take care for. Their short coat demands an occasional bath, and regular brushing. Also, Dalmatians require a great deal of exercise, especially as young dogs.

Dalmatians - & Other Pets

Since the breed is very active and communicative, it will enjoy playing with other dogs. However, the Dalmatian will not always find a soul-mate in a group of customary dogs gathering in a park for a walk. This trait is particularly valued by some people who do not want their pet to burst with love towards every other dog.

Dalmatians - Are They Good With Strangers?

Dalmatians are said to be friendly, easy-going dogs that do not experience any problems in the course of communication. This statement cannot cause any shadow of doubt when we are speaking about perfectly socialized, well-mannered dogs with sound personalities.

Quite a different picture occurs when a Dalmatian does not display all the features specific to a purebred dog. Such a dog can be a result of inconsistent breeding, which does not follow the basics of this business. Commercial breeders do not bother their head with finding out whether the sire and the dam's personalities match each other.

It creates a lot of trouble in the future. In particular, some Dalmatian puppies start to reveal undesirable traits among the most frequent ones being snapping, and excessive distrust towards strangers.

A Dalmatian's behavior is greatly conditioned by the means of training its owner employs while raising the pet. Needless to say, inherited factors such as ability to easily grasp the owner's commands, to find a clue to solving various tasks, and willingness to please its owner (which are all the signs of the dog's intelligence, and a sound personality) are indispensable for a Dalmatian's progress.

However, one should not rely solely on the dog's qualities proved by a good pedigree. Though the breed is generally highly intelligent, and noted for its readiness to work hard, no dog will ever grow into a wonderful, devoted pet without any obedience training.

It is recommended to use positive reinforcement while training a Dalmatian. These dogs are thought to be rather responsive and are easy to train. If the owner is new to the breed, there is some sense in consulting a professional coach.

Dalmatians - History

The origin of the Dalmatian is not quite clear. Some naturalists agree that the breed's motherland is Croatia. Others argue that dogs close to present day Dalmatians were known much earlier, in the 12-20th centuries BC. Their remains were found in Egypt and Cretan tombs.

However, written evidence suggests that the Dalmatian was developed in England. It is in this country where selective breeding took place to produce well-balanced dogs with round black and brown spots.

The first US Dalmatian Club was established in 1900. Dalmatian owners in Germany started to enjoy breed club membership about 20 years later. Some other European and Asian countries began to officially promote Dalmatians as late as in the second half of 20th century.
